5 Eagle Rock Employees Departing after a Century of Service

Eagle Rock School and Professional Development Center is saying goodbye to five of its staff members in the coming months — a group that represents more than 103 years of service to our progressive learning community.

All five of these employees have invested double-digit years at Eagle Rock, with four of them working behind the scenes, and one educator. From supervisor to receptionist, their job titles all had one purpose top of mind: a successful education for high school students and who are interested in taking control of their lives and learning. Each has plans for life after Eagle Rock, ranging from settling down closer to family, to reading books and seeing the country in a new RV.

Below, we honor these five veteran Eagle Rock community members, beginning with the longest-serving employee to the most “recent.” In each case, we asked them to describe their job responsibilities, their education and past professional experiences, their memories of the school, and future plans. Eagle Rock Debuts New on-campus Low-energy Faculty Triplex

A ribbon cutting ceremony and open house were held late last month here at Eagle Rock School and Professional Development Center, marking the completion of a much anticipated 3,700-square-foot triplex on campus that will house three staff members and provide a common room for select campus gatherings.

In addition to providing living quarters for three Eagle Rock staffers — all of whom will now be highly integrated into our residential life program — the triplex affords additional support for house parents, which means enhanced opportunities for student growth and success.

The floor plan includes two, one-bedroom apartments — each measuring about 750 square feet — a 1,500-square-foot two-bedroom apartment, and a shared common area similar to the commons found in all six of our student houses. The common area is designed for residential life activities such as support groups, movie nights, enrichment and club activities, as well as other recreational opportunities.

Our new triplex is unique in that it Continue reading…

Explore Week Sends Eagle Rock Students in Search of Adventure and Learning

This trimester, the Eagle Rock student body finds itself in pursuit of several outdoor adventures among the half-dozen or so Explore Week course offerings. The wilderness-style courses include camping and canoeing along two popular rivers, as well as another adventure course that features instruction — and participation — in some serious mountain biking.

Also among courses underway this week are a pair of hands-on projects that promise to improve the appearance of our 640-acre campus, including a group-participation mural to grace a wall near our Human Performance Center, and a spruce up for a new on-campus construction project that’s nearing completion.

Here’s what’s going over this five-day period, both on and off campus:

Mountain biking — There’smuch more to mountain biking then just hopping on a saddle and pedaling up or downhill, as students in this Explore Week course are learning. Among the tasks our students are choosing to take on are how to assess an entire mountain bike for mechanical issues, how to adjust wheel bearings, how to change a tube, and how to adjust shifting and brakes for optimal performance on the trail. In addition, students have been spending time each day riding bikes, with longer rides facing them at the end of the week.

The instructor for this course is Devin Konecny, who has a 15-year background in experimental plasma physics, computer diagnostics, machining, and Continue reading…

Meet the Team: Eagle Rock’s Facilities and Maintenance Assistant Terry Tierney

Terry Tierney Eagle RockTerry Tierney says it was our campus — 640 acres of beauty and nature — that initially drew him to toward Eagle Rock School. In fact, it was the mountainside community of Estes Park that prompted him to move his wife, Kerry and their son Finn into a home in nearby Estes Valley.

And it was while residing in this pristine setting that Terry joined the Eagle Rock family, responsible for assisting with the school’s maintenance and facilities needs. Here’s a little background on this campus care master:

Eagle Rock: Where did you go to college?

Terry Tierney: I am a graduate of Kean University in New Jersey with an undergraduate degree in public administration and criminal justice, along with a collateral degree in environmental studies. I also received an associate of arts degree in criminal justice from Union County College in New Jersey.

ER: What did you do prior to coming to work for Eagle Rock?

Terry: Before coming to Eagle Rock, my past lives in the Estes Valley include working at the Stanley Hotel, working seasonally for Rocky Mountain National Park, a ski lift operator at the old Hidden Valley Ski Area, and a wastewater operator at Upper Thompson Sanitation District.

Eagle Rock: What was it that attracted you to Eagle Rock?

Terry: I knew a lot about Continue reading…
